Smart Geyser vs Normal Geyser: Is a WiFi Geyser Worth It in Pakistan?

A smart geyser is worth it in Pakistan if you want hot water ready at set times without leaving the geyser on for hours. It costs more upfront than a normal geyser. But the timer and phone control mean it only heats when you need it, which is where the electricity savings come from. This guide explains how a smart geyser differs from a normal one, what it costs to run, and when an add-on timer switch is the cheaper option.

What Is a Smart Geyser?
A smart geyser is an electric storage geyser with WiFi built in. You control it from a phone app, as well as from the knob on the front.

With the Midea 50 litre smart geyser, for example, the Midea SmartHome app lets you:
- Set a heating timer, so the water is hot when you wake up
- Choose the exact temperature, from 30 to 80°C
- Switch it off remotely if you left it on
- Use your voice through Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa
- Let Memo U mode learn your routine and heat before you usually shower
If the WiFi drops, nothing stops working. The knob and LED display still switch the geyser on and set the temperature.
How a Smart Geyser Saves Electricity
A smart geyser doesn’t use less power while heating. A 2000 W smart geyser and a 2000 W normal geyser both use 2 units (kWh) for every hour they heat. The saving comes from heating less often and at the right time.
Many families switch the geyser on in the morning and forget it until night. The tank keeps topping itself up all day to stay hot, even when nobody needs water. A schedule stops that. The geyser heats before shower time, then switches off.
Two settings help the most:
- Keep the temperature at 50–55°C instead of the maximum. Hotter water loses heat faster and costs more to keep hot.
- Heat before load shedding. If your area has scheduled outages, set the timer to finish heating just before the power goes. The insulated tank keeps the water warm for hours.
If your electricity meter charges more in peak hours, a schedule also lets you heat outside them. Check your bill to see if peak and off-peak rates apply to you.
What About Adding a Timer Switch to a Normal Geyser?

You can get basic scheduling by adding a timer switch, or a WiFi switch, to a normal geyser. It’s a fair option if your current geyser is in good shape.
Keep these points in mind:
- The switch must handle the load. A 2000 W geyser draws about 9 amps, so the switch needs a higher rating than that. A qualified electrician should fit it on the geyser’s own circuit.
- It can only switch power on and off. It can’t change the geyser’s temperature, and it doesn’t know how hot the water is.
- It’s one more device to buy, fit and maintain.
Larger WiFi controllers for big gas and hybrid geysers are also sold in Pakistan, as separate systems. These are a different, more expensive category.
If you’re buying a new geyser anyway, a smart geyser with WiFi built in is the simpler route. The timer, temperature control and safety cut-offs all work together in one unit.
Is a Smart Geyser Safe?
Yes. Smart features sit on top of the same safety parts as a good normal geyser. The Midea D-20EFG series has an ELCB, a pressure-relief valve, dry-heating prevention, an overheat cut-off and an IPX4 water-resistant body. Remote switch-off adds peace of mind if you’re unsure whether the geyser is still on.

Which Should You Buy?
A smart geyser suits you if:
- You want hot water ready on a schedule, without remembering to switch it on.
- Your family showers at regular times, so a timer or Memo U mode fits your routine.
- You want to cut wasted heating and keep the bill in check.
A normal geyser may be enough if:
- It’s for a guest bathroom used a few times a month.
- The lowest upfront price matters most.
Midea’s smart geyser comes in three sizes: the 30 litre model for one or two people, 50 litres for two or three, and 100 litres for larger families. Not sure about electric at all? Start with our electric vs gas geyser guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of a smart geyser in Pakistan?
It depends on the size and brand. Smart models cost more than basic geysers of the same size. For today’s price on a Midea smart geyser, call or WhatsApp 0332-9944444 or email sales@zahidbrothers.com.
Does a smart geyser work without WiFi?
The Midea D-20EFG does. Its front knob and LED display switch it on and set the temperature. WiFi is only needed for the app and voice control.
Does a smart geyser use less electricity?
Not per hour of heating. It saves by heating only when you need hot water, instead of keeping the tank hot all day.
Can I control the geyser when I’m away from home?
Yes. As long as the geyser and your phone are both online, the app can switch it on or off from anywhere.
Which smart geyser size should I buy?
Pick 30 litres for one or two people, 50 litres for two or three, and 100 litres for three to five people who shower in the same hour.
